Voyageur Days 2017

Poster Voyageur Days 2017

Looking for a new adventure before the summer ends? We have created three new experiences that will help you to connect with the traditional knowledge of the Métis culture and create a special sense of place. Haskin Canoe is providing the North Voyageur Canoe with certified guides who will lead canoe trips down the North Saskatchewan River. Experience a 25 foot North Voyageur Canoe that will be transporting participants from Métis Crossing to Victoria Settlement. At Victoria Settlement Provincial Historic Site visitors paddling in Voyageur canoes will be greeted on the shore of the North Saskatchewan River and welcomed to Fort Victoria, which was established as a Hudson’s Bay Company fur trading post in 1862. Here, visitors will experience life as it was in the 1860’s with a focus on the fur trade.

This event includes an option for visitors to stay overnight in the campground at Métis Crossing.

Voyageur Days Activities:
* Camping at Métis Crossing – Friday and Saturday night
* Earn your Voyageur Certificate while paddling a 25 foot North Voyageur Canoe
* Listen to Métis Elders tell stories to help you connect with the Métis culture
* Try the Red River Jig or Square Dance to the sounds of “Rockin Fiddle”
* Complete several rows on the woven “Infinity Sash” using a historic weaving loom

School Tours and Nature Walks

Métis Crossing now offers school tours! Our tours include nature walks, historical museum walks, and plenty of open areas for kids to play and run. In addition we offer bannock during the lunch time interval and wild crafted tea harvested from Métis Crossing. This year Métis Crossing also had the wonderful opportunity to host a grass coil basket weaving workshop and a wild edible and medicinal plant walk during Reign Bough Fiddle Music and Arts Festival.

A Visit to the Apiary

An apiary is a bee yard where honey bees are kept and Metis Crossing now hosts 32 hives. A new swarm of honey bees caught on a rainy day are now happily in their new home making honey. The next day on a sunny morning, a gentle breeze keeps the mosquitoes away, and we witness natural wonders while coming to understand the bio-diversity of the boreal forest and prairie farm. The walk starts off down the historical Victoria Trail and leads through the 512 acre site of Metis Crossing. This particular visit we witnessed a White Admiral butterfly who gallantly criss-crossed Victoria Trail searching for nectar. Young deer explore the tree ridges as we search for raspberry and saskatoon berry bushes. We also take note of which flowering plants are thriving, big or small, that contribute to our local medicine knowledge.
